The first hat I ever made was a beret. I fell in love with the style and made numerous variations for myself and others. My favorite yarn to use was Lion Brand’s Homespun and I would add to the initial pattern to make it more slouchy or wider.

During my recent beanie designing binge I realized I hadn’t made a beret in years. What’s more, I had never designed one for Ginger Peachy.

My first inspiration for this beret was from Lacey Chabert in A Royal Christmas. Multiple times in that movie she wears a black sequin beret and I was dying to design something like it. Unfortunately, the yarn I ordered looked a little different than what I had in mind so I’m skipping the “inspired by” idea.

Instead, I did a little ribbing experiment and gave this hat some easy swirls.

I simply crocheted the beret as normal but worked front post double crochet (fpdc) in even intervals to create the ribbed swirl. I never knew it would be so easy to create a texture, but now that I think about it, why shouldn’t it be?

The funny thing about designing, I don’t know how many times I have what I consider a complicated design in mind only to find out how simple it really is once I’ve worked out the pattern.

So don’t be deceived by the look of this hat, the Amily Ribbed Beret is really easy to make. As long as you know the basics of crocheting in the round, this should be a breeze.

Let’s take a look, shall we!

Amily Ribbed Beret

Skill level easy

Finished Size

Fits 20” – 22” head size, with notes for size changes

Materials

Medium weight yarn (I used Patons Metallic in Metallic Black)
Crochet hook H/5.00mm

Gauge

Round 1 measures 1 inch in circumference

Notes on Sizes

For a tighter brim, use a smaller hook for rounds 18 – 20
For a smaller hat, leave off a round or two during the initial building phase (Rounds 2 – 11) and continue instructions. Note, when leaving off a round, stitch count will alter. However, the theory should still be adequate.
