What do you do when you have an idea and you can’t figure out which medium to create it in?

Because I am a clayer as well as a crocheter (among other things) this can be a problem. When I was brainstorming for the Classic Video Game Controller Pillow crochet pattern I also wanted to do it in polymer clay. But which do I choose? I couldn’t come to any conclusion so I risked repetition and made it in both.

First I designed it in crochet. You can find the free pattern for my Classic Video Game Controller right here. I also have digital copies available for purchase in both my stores, Ravelry and Etsy.

Then I finally got around to making it in clay. What I didn’t do with crochet that I definitely wanted to add in clay was the wire.

All clayers know how hard it can be to make sure your piece is sturdy enough. I can’t say I’ve accomplished that but I definitely tried with this piece and used my Liquid Sculpey to reinforce weak areas. My fingers are still crossed.

One of the hardest things for me to remember when designing anything is not to get too technical. Clearly little clay charms and pieces like this are cute because of their simplicity and cartoon-like quality. I’m not sure I’ve got that right either.

But here’s to learning a little bit more. At least I’m getting a little closer to reaching my goals for this year by working with clay more often.
